Presley: Clinic is closed -ER visit

It's July 4th..Clinic is closed, Presley has a fever, to the ER we go. :( Presley has been fevering for about a day. The fever has been sitting around 99.8 and100.4. I finally called the on-call doctor and yes, they wanted to have a CBC and blood cultures done to see what's going on. They also did a virus swab and it came back positive for Rhino virus. YEAH! The good news is that Presley's ANC is 4800 so they did not require us to spend the night. The ER is just not our favorite place. The ER nurses are not as familiar with port accessing and all the medication. Protocol says we have to have blood pressure, pulse ox, and the heart monitors. New nurses, new environment equals a very anxious little girl and mama. I requested a 4th floor nurse to come access the port and that went well. They then got the blood cultures started and send the CBC to the labs. They gave her a dose of antibiotics. Then it was decided we would go home. The bad news come when it was time to de-access her port. Why didn't I think to ask for the same nurse that assessed her port??? The nurse took the sticker off then went to pull the needle out. I guess she didn't pull hard enough but didn't know what to do so she yelled for another nurse. "I can't get the port out." At this point Presley is screaming and its going down fast. No other nurse came to help so then she yelled again. Finally 2 other nurses came and it was starting to get intense. I just keep singing songs to Presley hoping this was all going to end soon. A second nurse then tried to pull the port out and couldn't do it so the 3rd nurse who actually pulled one out before helped and was like.. "That was not big deal". ALL that stress for nothing really. The nurses in the ER don't see the power ports very often. When they do, they sorta freeze. They know it's not always easy and they are not super familiar with it. The nurse also kept asking me "Do I flush the line now? or do it later? Should I do heparin yet?" My job is to be the mom, yes I know a lot about the port but not all the exact details. Glad that was over and we got to go home. We got home at about 4pm. We went to a friends house for dinner and was hoping Presley would get to see the fireworks. We had been talking about them all week. By 7:30 she was just too tried and needed to go home. Crew, grandma, friends and I went to the park to watch fireworks. The night was just perfect except Presley and daddy were not with us. I cried while watching the fireworks. Who does that? A mom with a sick child who seems to miss all holidays. She was in the hospital for Easter and couldn't walk to pick up eggs at an Easter egg hunt and missed the Fireworks. I know that it was harder on me knowing she was missing out that it was on her. It's hard for a mama heart to see your child not doing what the other kids are doing.
We are thankful for our country! Gob bless America. Happy 4th!
Good thing for the 24th of July here in Utah, we might just get to watch fireworks.
